The Annual Valentine Awards
for the best haiku in
The Heron's Nests of 1999 (Volume I)

In future years the Valentine Awards will be derived from a full volume of twelve issues. Since The Heron's Nest inaugural issue appeared in September of 1999, there are only four issues from which to choose our favorite haiku.

The Valentine Awards issue will be posted and mailed in mid February, 2000. As with all other issues of The Heron's Nest, this awards issue will be sent to the American Haiku Archives at the California State Library in Sacramento, and to the Museum of Haiku Literature in Tokyo. Notification of the Valentine Awards winners will be sent to major haiku organizations and independent journals for announcement as permitted.

The winning poet will receive a marble plaque on which his or her name and haiku have been inscribed. There will be one runner-up who will receive a certificate of award.

note: Commentaries for the readers' choices will be included in the Valentine Awards issue.

Editor's Award
To be chosen from the four 1999 The Heron's Nest Award winners. The winning poet will receive a marble plaque on which his or her name and haiku have been inscribed.

Readers' Award
To be chosen by votes from you, the readers of The Heron's Nest. The poet whose haiku is voted best by readers will also receive a marble plaque on which his or her name and haiku have been inscribed. There will be one runner-up decided by the overall voting. All haiku appearing in the first four issues are eligible.

How to Vote
If you wish to vote, please review the poems and when you've chosen your favorite (one only please) you can cast a vote in one of two ways:

The in-hand deadline for ballots is midnight, January 31, 2000.
